The Swiss third in the world ranking has not played in Montreal since 2011
Montreal - Roger Federer confirmed his presence next week at the Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Montreal to finally aspire to win in Quebec.
"I'm happy to be back in Montreal, especially because I have not had the opportunity to play there for several years," said the Swiss, third in the world ranking, in a statement issued by the organizers.
Since 2011, Federer has not played in Montreal.
He has twice won the Rogers Cup, each time in Toronto in 2004 and 2006, where this Masters 1000 is played in even years.
Montreal is the host city in odd years - so far as it is now - while women in the WTA Premier will do so now in Toronto.
For his last appearance in the Rogers Cup in 2014 in Toronto, the Swiss lost to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
"We are very pleased to announce the return of the great Roger Federer," said Eugène Lapierre, head of the Rogers Cup, stressing that the Swiss will celebrate his 36th birthday on Tuesday.
Federer will be seeded N.3 behind Scottish Andy Murray and Spanish Rafael Nadal for the US Open Grand Slam in September.
The organizers of the Rogers Cup can count on the best of the world although the Serbian Novak Djokovic has left for the rest of the season due to an injury in the elbow.
