PRAGUE.- Swiss tennis player Roger Federer said today that he will represent Europe with pride in the Laver Cup, a turner to be played next September for the first time and in which a European team, which will also be the Spanish Rafael Nadal, will face a combined world.
"It's going to be a tough tournament, tough matches, that's the Lever Cup idea. This is how the captains see it. We want to represent Europe with pride, "Federer told a news conference in the Czech capital, where the first edition of this annual tournament will take place from 22 to 24 September.
This tournament, created in honor of the Australian icon of tennis Rod Laver, has an innovative format to face for three days the best tennis players in Europe against a selection of players from the rest of the world.
"I look forward to the moment when I can play alongside my great rivals like Rafa Nadal."
"We never had the possibility to be in the same team, to support each other or to play together a double because we always play against each other," said the Swiss.
Federer, who today promoted the event by playing a game with Czech Tomas Berdych on the deck of a boat on the Vltava River, also predicted that it will be a "unique experience for players and the public."
Both teams are made up of six players, four of whom are at the top of the ATP ranking, while the other two are chosen by the respective captains, the Swedish Bjorn Borg for Europe and the American John McEnroe for the rest of the world.
